FACILITIE

NONHUMAN PRIMATE FACILITY

The primate research center of Zhejiang University was established in 2016 with a total of 500 square meters whose mission is to develop nonhuman primate (NHP) models to accelerate scientific discovery. The center is one branch of Zhejiang University Laboratory Animal Center which is located in ZiJinGang campus.

The primate research center employs one veterinarian and several staff to ensure excellent animals care as well as superior management and operational oversight. There are two surgery rooms, two quarantine rooms, six macaques’ rooms, two marmosets’ rooms, a squirrel monkeys’ room,a entertainment room, a perfusion room and so on. A biosafety cabinet is in the dissecting room. A portable anesthesia machine is in the surgery Room facilitating surgical procedures. A wall and door were added at the middle of the corridor to separate quarantine area from feeding area. One video monitor is used to observe what happen in the quarantine room and the corridor.

The center is interested in Neuroscience which has 8 active principal investigators using animals. Currently, there are almost 50 monkeys in the center. The safety training is provided by IACUC regularly to make sure that everyone who contacts with animals keeps safe.

Because of NHPs’ similarity to humans, the primate research center helps us understand, promote and improve human brain development.
