CONFERENCE

Basis Elements of Intelligent Primate Systems

Anna Wang Roe, Professor & Director, ZIINT

The cerebral cortex of human and nonhuman primate brains is characterized by submillimeter functional domains. However, little is known about networks based on such functional nodes. We have developed new methods to stimulate single submillimeter nodes in macaque monkey cortical and subcortical sites, and to map at local and whole brain scale the mesoscale networks activated by single node stimulation. We find resulting networks are highly organized, specific and sparse. Our data suggest the presence of intra-areal and inter-areal micro-networks that form basis functions for common domain-based convergence, divergence, and binding strategies. Our findings establish a domain-based connectional architecture in the primate brain, and present new constraints for building whole brain networks. We work towards developing a brain theory that will impact neuroscience, medicine, AI, and neuromorphics.

Dr. Anna Wang Roe (B.A. Harvard 1984, PhD MIT 1991) is the Director of the Interdisciplinary Institute of Neuroscience and Technology at Zhejiang University (www.ZIINT.zju.edu.cn). She is known for her studies in visual and somatosensory processing in primate cerebral cortex and for her development of multimodal neurotechnologies.  Her doctoral work under Dr. Mriganka Sur on the 'rewired ferret' preparation is a well-known paradigm for studying brain development and plasticity. As a postdoctoral fellow under Dr. Daniel Ts'o and Torsten Wiesel (Rockefeller University, Baylor College of Medicine), she applied intrinsic signal optical imaging methods to elucidate the organization of area V2 (the second visual cortical area) of the primate. Her first faculty appointment at Department of Neurobiology at Yale University produced a series of studies in which visual illusions were used to differentiate the roles of visual areas V1 and V2. She continued her pioneering work on primate cortex at Vanderbilt University (Professor in Psychology, Radiology, and Biomedical Engineering), and developed integrated approaches (anatomy, electrophysiology, optical imaging, fMRI, optogenetics, near infrared laser stimulation, behavior) to address questions on cortical organization. Her subsequent work at Oregon National Primate Research Center at OHSU focused on postnatal development of foveal vision. She is now full-time at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China and is pursuing the project ‘Columnar Connectome in Macaque monkeys’, a project she hopes will bring understanding of the architectural basis of intelligent systems. She has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles, organized numerous international conferences and symposia, and actively participates in review panels and editorships. In recognition for her contributions, she has received Sloan, Whiltehall, Packard Fellowships and has been elected member of the International Neuropsychological Symposium, as well as SPIE Fellow and AAAS Fellow.

Brain science is currently one of the major hot spotsin scientific research all around the world. During the past years, Zhejiang University has been closely followingthe frontier brain science and has made great progress in this field. The goal of thissymposium is to highlight exciting topics in auditory neuroscience and to share in-depth discussions about the future of the fields. Two keynote speakers, professor Jufang He from City University of Hong Kong and professor Xiaoqin Wang from John Hopkins University shared their recent work in studying neural basis for memory encoding and social communication. New findings and cutting-edge techniques were also introduced by other speakers, includingneurophysiology, psychophysics, neuroimaging, modeling, neuroanatomy, optogenetics, and neuroengineering. These theoretical and experimental proceedings in auditory neuroscience will significantly improve our understanding of the neural mechanisms of many auditory-related diseases such as language processing disorders and social disorders, which therefore may contribute finding new targets in clinical treatment. This symposiumhas been an important academic feast for worldwide scientists to explore the latest development of auditory neuroscience through establishing a platform for experts in related fields to share their achievements. Moreover, this symposium will provide more opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations even across countries in the future.
