Release Date: May 3, 2017      Writer:Juange Cheng

On April 27, 2017,  Prof. Anna Wang Roe was invited to give an plenary talk, entitled “Imaging at the level of neural circuits”, at the International Society of Magnetic Reonance in  Medicine (ISMRM) 25th Annual Meeting, which was held at Honolulu, US, together with Dr. Walter Koroshetz, director of National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and Prof. Heidi Johansen-Berg,  professor of University of Oxford.

ISMRM annual meeting is the biggest scientific gathering event for the scientists, engineers, and clinicians in the field of magnetic resonance imaging in medicine, which has more than 4,000 attenders each year. This plenary session was entitled “Brain at Work: Understanding Neural Circuits Through Advancing Neuroimaging” and organized by Prof. Gregor Adriany, Prof. Hanzhang Liu (JHU), and Prof. Ed X. Wu. Prof (UHK).

Anna Wang Roe reviewed the emerging technologies, including intrinsic light imaging, high spatial resolution fMRI, novel neuromodulation methods, etc., in the study of basic neuroscience, and discussed how these novel imaging and modulation tools promote the better understanding of the brain at the level of neural circuits. These emerging technologies includes lots of methods developed by Prof. Roe and her team, which includes: the transparent window on monkey brain, initial dip optical imaging, near-infrared neuromodulation, etc. She also emphasized the importance of cortical columns, a cluster of neurons with similar functional preferences, as the fundamental operative units and provided a version to promote imaging techniques for better monitoring neuronal activity at cortical column levelin vivo and non-invasively.

At the end, Prof. Roe acknowledged the major contributors to this talk, the three PI from ZIINT, which includes Prof. Gang Chen, Prof. Xiaotong Zhang and Prof. Hsin-Yi Lai. Her work was highly recognized by the society, and lots of discussion with Prof. Roe happened following her talk.
